"Remember this, humans are defined not by their limitations, but by the intentions I have for them; not by what they seem to be, but by everything it means to be created in my image." - God
So this quote is from a book I am currently reading called "The Shack". My dear friend, Andrea, recommended it to me as I was looking for books to take on this trip for fun reading amongst all the work and studying. I must say I am almost halfway through it and LOVE it! I highly recommend it to anyone. It's a very intriguing story that I don't want to ruin and I have no idea how it is going to end, but the chapter I am currently on is a very interesting look on who God is and why he is the amazing God he is. I really liked the line above from the book because there have been times I've avoided doing things because I felt like I couldn't do them, such as travel to a place like Kenya. However, I finally listened to what God was telling me he had planned for my life, embraced it and as God does, he provided exactly what I needed to be able to follow in his plan. It's a pretty amazing feeling when you finally hear God speak to you and trust completely in him. I feel so blessed to be living out his intentions for me!
The past couple of days have been steadily busy. I was in MCH clinic yesterday and we saw several different patients. It is so nice to see a variety of problems rather than what I like to call the trifecta: Hypertension, Type 2 Diabetes, and Hyperlipidemia - a mainstay in doctors' offices in Kenutcky. Yes, I do realize I am in women's health but those are still not as common here and it is refreshing after four months of nothing but the trifecta in my past rotations. What's even better than that?? I haven't seen a single person smoking a cigarette! Hallelujuah!! I love walking around outside and not having to wave away a cloud of smoke or hold my breath as I walk past people smoking. Wish that would happen in America!
Today Emily and I stayed on the ward together since she spent yesterday in the gynecology clinic (that is every Monday). We watched the first of twins be born breech before going to watch a c-section that had a minor complication, but the baby was ok. We checked in on the twins and the c-section baby after the surgery and learned that 5 babies had been born in 30 minutes - WOW! Super busy day on the OB ward and for the Pediatric doctors checking on the babies. We then observed a surgery on an ectopic pregnancy where the fetus was only 4-6 weeks along. It was the tiniest thing I've ever seen, yet the doctor could still point out where an eye was forming. It was a reminder of how quickly the life starts to form inside the mother. The afternoon basically consisted of a two hour surgery on a patient with over 20 fibroids on her uterus so they had to change the game plan mid-procedure to doing a hysterectomy. Emily and I both learned today that we have got to build up some stamina and quick! We tried to sway side-to-side during the last surgery but our legs and back were still throbbing in agony after barely sitting all day. (I'm not sure how I ever waited tables for 8 hours without a break.) I think we will start doing some running or walking around here to try and help us, but that won't start until next week because....
We have only two more work days this week and on Friday we leave for our weekend safari! Woo-hoo!! This is one thing all three of us have been anxiously waiting for and it is sure to be amazing! We are going with a few other visitors here at the hospital so hopefully we can all avoid lion attacks :) God bless everyone!
You are getting to do/see SO much in OB...I am quite jealous!! You are blessed!! Looking forward to hearing about the Safari!!
